"This book is a tribute to New York, but not just any New York. It’s a tribute to my New York—the people I met, the places I visited, the things I witnessed, the experiences I had and shared. When I visit a city, I like to walk through it. I like to hear snippets of conversations, the mix of accents and languages, the hum of cars and construction, the sounds of nature and birds, people heading to work, couples at cafés, hustlers on the corners, crackheads shouting, kids laughing, and everything else. I enjoy observing the differences between neighborhoods, populations, and communities. Most of all, I try to avoid the touristy spots. Some are unavoidable and some are still interesting to see, but I prefer to experience the more authentic aspects of the city—the parts closer to the everyday lives of its people. This often means staying in my own bubble. I like to travel alone, and I rarely seek out other French people abroad—or travel with friends, for that matter.
